Every career has a moment where a single yes opens the door to something more. ‘Yes Moments’ is a blog series that celebrate the choices that sparked opportunities and shaped the professional journeys of our people.
Hwa Ming's journey of firsts began with one unexpected Yes. Trained in Aerospace Engineering, he chose a different path - Banking. Since joining OCBC's Graduate Talent Programme, he has taken on new roles, continuously expanding his skills, perspectives, and possibilities.

My decision to say ‘Yes’ to OCBC’s Graduate Talent Programme (GTP) in 2021 was serendipitous.
I was encouraged by my Nanyang Technological University roommate to apply for the programme. He had secured a placement in Operations & Technology (O&T).

I graduated with a degree in Aerospace Engineering, but because the aviation industry was grounded due to COVID‑19, I began exploring other paths and found myself drawn to the opportunities available at the bank.
The interview process was engaging and efficient. I still remember speaking with three O&T department heads and sharing my university projects and experiences. To my surprise, I received an offer within a week. Saying ‘Yes’ in that moment marked the beginning of my transformative journey at OCBC.
Embracing Learning and Innovation Opportunities

Reflecting on my university days, I realised that while academics matter, a career spans decades. As such, I made a promise to myself to stay open and embrace every opportunity that came my way.
Throughout GTP, I was introduced to a variety of curated courses designed to prepare graduates for the workforce.
My first role in O&T was dynamic and challenging. I was involved in innovative projects that reshape how younger generations like Gen Z and Gen Alpha interact with banks. One memorable opportunity was serving as project lead for the launch of the bank’s metaverse platform, OCBCx65Chulia. Even as a junior associate, my manager, Malie Foo, encouraged me to form and lead a team. His confidence in me helped me push past my lack of experience.

Growing Through Diverse Rotations

I then rotated across various roles within O&T as a Business Analyst, Technology Architect, and Mobile Engineer. I also played a crucial role in developing the Android version of our mobile banking app and was part of the team behind the e Angpow feature, a unique digital offering in the market then.
My next rotation was then at Marine Parade branch where I served as a customer service ambassador. I learned to navigate customer interactions, especially with elderly clients, and used my local dialect skills to improve their experience. My earlier job as an F&B waiter also proved unexpectedly valuable, as it taught me the importance of delivering exceptional customer service.
After completing my rotations, I moved into a role as a Mobile Engineer, focusing on the Consumer Financial Services (CFS) mobile banking app. I contributed to launching new features that simplified banking for customers across different regions.
Transition to Group Secretariat

In May 2024, I said ‘Yes’ to my next opportunity and transitioned to Group Secretariat. This role was a significant shift from my previous ones, requiring me to work in a smaller team as I supported the processes of top-level decision-making. In this capacity, I gained firsthand exposure to corporate governance practices and strategic planning frameworks that guide the bank’s long-term direction. With guidance from my manager, Christina Kwang, I quickly adapted to the fast-moving and highly collaborative environment.
Around the same period, I began pursuing a master’s degree in quantitative finance at SMU, balancing studies with work and family life with my wife and young son. This was a strategic decision from my desire to better understand banking and financial data, as it became increasingly important in my role to support the Secretariat’s strategic discussions.

New Frontiers and Looking Ahead
The opportunity to move to the Greater China Business Office (GCBO) in August 2025 opened yet another new chapter for my career. In this role, I worked directly with clients to understand their financial needs and translate them into product solutions.
This experience helped me bridge the gap between technical execution and client-facing strategy. With guidance from senior leaders, I learned to navigate complex client interactions and gained a deeper understanding of the market.
Reflecting on my journey at OCBC, I am grateful for the diverse opportunities I have been given. OCBC’s culture of mobility in a supportive community has allowed me to discover where I can contribute most meaningfully. My career story is a testament to the value of saying “yes”, embracing change, and remaining committed to continuous learning.
In my own words: Never stop saying yes.

Every journey starts with a choice. When was the last time you said yes? Opportunity Starts Here.
